Using the technician app
The Openhood app puts your jobs on a phone or tablet in the bay. The familiar Openhood workflows, your dashboard, your jobs, and inspections, run inside the app exactly as they do in a browser. The app adds the things only a device can do: signing in, the camera, an offline banner, and push notifications.
Owner-provisioned access
You do not create your own login. A workshop owner or admin issues you an access pass. There are no passwords to remember.
Signing in with a one-time access pass
Your owner or admin sends you an access pass. It contains a short access code, a sign-in link, and a QR code that all point at the same place.
- Install the Openhood app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app. Enter Code is the default sign-in method.
- Type the access code from your pass, or tap Scan QR to scan it, or use Sign in with SMS.
- Confirm the code sent to your phone by SMS. Your phone is the security check.
The numeric access code is read as soon as you finish typing it, so there is no separate submit step.
The QR code is a convenience, not the security gate
Scanning the QR code just saves you typing. The actual proof that you are you is possession of your phone and the SMS code. A pass is one-time use.
What runs natively and what runs in the app surface
The app is a native shell around the Openhood product surfaces.
- The dashboard, your jobs, the job page, and inspections are the same screens you would use in a browser.
- Sign-in, the camera and photo library, the offline banner, and push notifications are handled natively by the app.
This means a fix to the product shows up in the app right away, with nothing extra to update on your phone.
What you can see on a phone
Technician access on a phone is deliberately limited. You can work your jobs and capture evidence, but the app does not show customer names, phone numbers, emails, quotes, invoices, or pricing. Those stay on the higher-trust surfaces a phone is not the right place for.
If you get signed out
An admin can revoke a device at any time from the team settings panel, for example if a phone is lost. If your session has been revoked or has expired, the app drops you back to the login screen. Sign in again with a fresh access pass from your owner or admin.
